Causation

Firefighters face elevated cancer rates due to dermal absorption and inhalation of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) present in turnout gear moisture barriers, durable water repellent coatings, and AFFF firefighting foam. A 2023 Notre Dame study found PFAS in 100% of tested turnout gear samples. The IARC classifies PFOA as a Group 1 carcinogen. Studies demonstrate firefighters have significantly elevated rates of testicular, kidney, bladder, and prostate cancers compared to the general population.
