Causation

Nitrous oxide inhalation irreversibly oxidizes cobalt in vitamin B12, rendering it inactive and disrupting methionine synthase — an enzyme critical to myelin synthesis and DNA methylation in the nervous system. Chronic use causes subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord (SACD), peripheral neuropathy, and in severe cases, permanent paralysis. Medical literature extensively documents the neurotoxic mechanism. Plaintiffs allege manufacturers knew their products were widely abused recreationally (especially large-format tanks with no legitimate culinary use) but continued to market aggressively without age restrictions, abuse-deterrent packaging, or neurological warnings.
